July staycation
We’re staycation-ing, this week. A week together in our house with our stuff. I’ve been looking forward to it for weeks! But, in the moment, it can be a delicate balance between chores or house projects and actual relaxing and recreation. I find myself tending to do stuff for the house or just my usual zoning out in front of the tv before I turn my attention to hobbies or exploring our area. It can be difficult to transition from my typical routines at home into the recreation that’s readily at hand because my favorite books and supplies are here.
So, I pause. I notice my behavior and decide if it’s what I want to be doing, thinking about, and feeling. I made a list on Friday night, a wishlist for my staycation. Checking the list helps me check in with myself.

In the cool of the early morning, I worked in the garden, journalled, walked around the neighborhood, and tidied the kitchen. The day is brightening now and starting to warm up. I feel my freedom to do staycation wishlist stuff. A drive down to the park for a stroll along the water? Paints and collage? Read in a shady spot in the backyard?
Rest and recreation matter. They connect me to myself, provide ways to express myself and explore what inspires me, and grant me a pause from the labor I perform for others. Similarly, they invite connection with the people closest to me. They give us a little bubble of time and space to see and hear and enjoy each other rather than the usual focus on our survival together.
