creature comforts

Many years ago,  I saw a commercial (for a hotel chain?) with the tagline "You can do anything when you're comfortable." I thought, "Yes! That's me! I CAN do anything when I am comfortable." The problem, however, is that I am more frequently uncomfortable.  Whether it's sensory overstimulation and/or mega-powerful moods, I struggle with discomfort and then... I kinda fall apart.

The good news is that I've lived in this body for a long time.  Now, when I feel uncomfortable I understand that I need comforting. I've learned to comfort myself. Here are a few of my favorite creature comforts in no particular order:
  • new! leg warmers!  this pair is wool on the outside, soft fleece on the inside. like buttah!
  • ear plugs. silence is golden.
  • buzz-cut. can you feel your hair? must be time for another cut.
  • slippers. I have 5 pairs. (or 7 pairs?)
  • large, south-facing windows for lots of sunlight. especially in the dread of winter. this was a house-hunting requirement.
  • real bra v. soft bra v. no bra
  • mugs. never glasses.
  • colored pens. I buy them by the bouquet.
  • leggings not jeans. jeans need a belt. belts are fussy and can dig into my belly. please, be gentle to the belly.

It's a little more challenging to comfort myself at the office, but I've brought some creature comforts in there, too:
  • ear plugs. always.
  • room divider screen. prop it up in my cube and prop up the illusion of privacy. it also reduces interruptions.
  • hot tea. in a mug.
  • colored pens. but different ones. office-specific colored pens for doing work. not groovy colored pens for journaling and coloring and drafting love notes to distant friends.
  • lip balm. right now it's a super smooth tube of eos raspberry frose.
  • hand lotion. publicly funded soap is very drying. dry hands are itchy. eschew itchy!
Your turn!  What creature comforts ease your way to "do anything?"
