Recalling the prophets
How could, and why did, so many of the people who claim to follow Jesus reject him, his example, and his influence so thoroughly and instead follow this power-hungry, death-wielding, wannabe emperor?! I’m skimming news articles to understand but the behavior doesn’t align with the espoused beliefs.
I recall the warnings of the prophets in scriptures, and the life and teachings of their savior according to the gospels, and I think ‘these Christians should have known better.’ They should have been the protectors of life, of their/our neighbors. Instead, they damned us all, starting with the most vulnerable - the very ones their good book instructs them to tend to - the strangers, refugees, immigrants, the poor, old, sick, and imprisoned. You don’t have to be religious in a Judeo-Christian tradition to perceive this stuff. You don’t have to be religious at all. (I'm not.)
I recall the phrases “ears to hear” and “eyes to see,” but eyes have been closed and ears shut both to the words of the prophets who described for us what evil looks, sounds, and acts like - as well as to this president’s own words describing the harm he planned to deliver.
I understand, yes, that we can contact our representatives, protest in marches and rallies, show up and be counted as those opposing this president and his regime of abuse, violence, and grief. We can be visible until we, too, are deported &/or disappear. The abuses are spreading and will continue to spread. I feel angry, frightened, and anxious.
The warnings, the prophets, the savior, all came and went. We are here, now. I find myself wondering, what teachings could reach us? What would people actually perceive and act upon? How do we halt and undo what’s already been set in motion?

In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
“‘You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
For this people’s heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.’
